Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming education by introducing new approaches to personalized learning, intelligent tutoring, automated assessment, learning analytics, content generation, and educational administration. These technologies offer considerable opportunities to improve the quality and efficiency of education, but their expansion also creates significant ethical, social, and sustainability challenges. Issues such as algorithmic bias, student privacy, data security, lack of transparency, unequal access to technology, academic integrity, and insufficient teacher preparedness can limit the benefits of AI and potentially reinforce existing educational inequalities. This article examines the concept of responsible AI in education and explores how technological innovation can be balanced with educational equity and sustainable development. Drawing on recent systematic reviews and international policy guidance, the article proposes a responsible AI framework based on five interconnected dimensions: human-centred innovation, educational equity and inclusion, ethical governance and accountability, AI literacy and teacher capacity, and environmental and institutional sustainability. Responsible AI requires educational institutions to evaluate not only what AI can accomplish but also how, why, and for whom it is deployed. The article argues that AI should complement human intelligence and professional judgment rather than replace them. When supported by inclusive infrastructure, transparent governance, appropriate teacher training, strong data protection, and continuous evaluation, responsible AI can contribute to Sustainable Development Goal 4 and broader sustainable development objectives. The article concludes that the future of AI in education should be guided by human rights, educational values, equity, accountability, and long-term sustainability.
