Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming education, employment, communication, healthcare, business, and other areas of society. As AI technologies become increasingly integrated into everyday life, preparing students to understand, evaluate, and responsibly use AI has become an important educational priority. Artificial intelligence literacy extends beyond the ability to operate AI tools; it includes knowledge of AI concepts, critical evaluation of AI-generated information, ethical awareness, data literacy, problem-solving skills, and an understanding of the social and environmental consequences of AI. This article examines the importance of AI literacy for sustainable development and proposes a comprehensive educational approach for preparing students for an AI-driven future. The discussion focuses on the relationship between AI literacy, sustainable education, critical thinking, digital inclusion, ethical responsibility, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Recent research indicates that AI literacy education is increasingly viewed as a multidimensional competence involving technical, cognitive, social, ethical, and behavioral dimensions. UNESCO's AI Competency Framework for Students provides a useful foundation by organizing AI competencies around a human-centred mindset, ethics of AI, AI techniques and applications, and AI system design (UNESCO, 2024). The article argues that integrating AI literacy into education can help students become informed users and responsible co-creators of AI while supporting equitable, inclusive, and sustainable development.
